The Secret of Monkey Island

1990

King’s Quest established the graphic adventure genre, but it wasn’t without its flaws. The puzzle difficulty and frequent deaths frustrated many players, including Ron Gilbert, a self-taught game designer. In response, Gilbert pitched a game about pirates to Lucasfilm Games and joined up with designers Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman to work on the project.

Instead of emphasizing difficult puzzles, as was the case in King’s Quest, The Secret of Monkey Island made great use of clever writing and mechanics, as well as one of the first instances of a “dialog tree” to entertain players. As the hapless aspiring pirate Guybrush Threepwood, players solved puzzles and interacted with other characters throughout the game’s humorous setting, which included sword-fighting scenes that were driven by insults rather than quick button-presses.

Ushering in a new era of adventure games, The Secret of Monkey Island was well received by critics and players, but was only modestly successful for the company.
